1.     Does the documentary create sympathy for the prison inmates? Does interviewing prison inmates help us gain a greater understanding of crime and punishment?  Should the victims or their relatives have been interviewed to create balance?

2.     Do the inmates show remorse?  Should criminals have to show remorse in order to be released from prison?  Should criminals be able to live a reasonably normal life in prison?

3.     Which are the most important of the following aims of punishment?

a.     Retribution [revenge]

b.     Deterrence [create a fear of the consequences of offending/reoffending

c.     Rehabilitation/reformation [turn criminals into law-abiding people]

d.     Protection [stopping society being affected by the actions of criminals e.g. by putting them in prison]

e.     Vindication [encouraging respect for the law by enforcing it clearly]

4.     How should the above criteria be balanced when designing a criminal code?
