Alumni Data Assistant (every other Thursday afternoon)

Description: I need 2 students to help execute our Alumni Birthday Card program.  We would like to mail birthday cards to alumni and use this as an opportunity to ask them to update or ensure their contact information is current.  This would involve receiving a list of upcoming birthdays, assembling the birthday cards and including any inserts to be mailed and preparing the envelopes to be mailed.  Other duties may include contacting alumni by phone to update contact information.  This job can take place every second Thursday afternoon from 2:30 - 4:30 pm.

Qualifications (Preference): Strong attention to detail. Commitment to confidentiality. Neat/Legible handwriting. Comfortable using Microsoft Word Mail Merge or willingness to learn.

Anthropology Room Librarian (open schedule)

Description: Keeping the anthropology room library organized. Some occasional typing. The job will operate on an open schedule but the student will need to keep an eye on the Anthropology library, help students locate material in the library and keep track of borrowing.

Art Studio Assistants (open schedule)

Description: I need two students to assist with maintaining the Art and Pottery Studios. You will perform a variety of tasks including materials inventory, organization and clean-up. Work times will be flexible, in consultation with me.

Qualifications (Preference): Students who have good organizational skills, are careful and respectful with equipment, and are able to work independently will be given preference for these jobs.

 

Bike Maintenance Team (evenings to be determined)

Description: The bike maintenance team will meet for two hours once a fortnight to repair any bikes and complete other jobs that are required to keep the bike shed in good shape.  These six students receive 6 hours of professional training in March.  In return they complete this job for one full year.  The dates on their contract will read 'March 2009 - March 2010'.

BioChem Greenhouse Attendant (open schedule)

Camp Shed Team (on call)

Description: Camp shed equipment will be returned to these 2 students.  They will be responsible for ensuring that all equipment has been returned on time and has been cleaned and dried.  Their work will be heavy in hours around project weeks/events, light on work during much of the term.  I will find some tasks for them to do in the interim period – that is, itinerising + repairing equipment.

Qualifications (Preference): None.

 

Canadian Student Recruitment Assistants (Tuesday afternoons)

Description: These students will advise and assist with new student recruitment initiatives related to individual solicitation, group mailings and organizing school visits.  The audience for this work is high schools students in Canada.  These students will usually gather for one hour on Tuesday afternoons (2:30 to 3:30).

Qualifications (Preference): Canadian or interest in learning more about the Canadian high school system.

 

Canadian Student Recruitment Assistants Online (on call)

Description: These students will advise and assist with new student recruitment initiatives related to online systems and social networking potential.  The audience for this work is high schools students in Canada, and particularly those who are in the process of applying to a UWC.  These students can complete this work on their own schedule. 

Qualifications (Preference): Skill in online communication and social networking or interested in developing that skill. Canadian or understanding of the Canadian student application process.

 

English Tutors (open schedule)

Description: I need students to tutor English B students for one hour each week. The tutoring will involve various kinds of assistance with English for example conversation, help with grammar or writing.  The student will be required to report on his/her job weekly.  

Qualifications (Preference): Advanced spoken and written English.

 

English Tutor Organizer (open schedule)

Description: I need one student to organise tutors with their tutees and to supervise the English B tutoring throughout the year. This student will need to devise a way that tutors will confirm that they are fulfilling their responsibilities each week and report the progress to the English B teacher.

Fire Fighters - First Year  (Tuesday mornings, on call)

Description: Fire Fighters train once a week before breakfast to provide the college with a first line of defense should there be a fire on campus. Students who are involved in first aid cannot fight fires as both groups are needed in cases of emergency. 

Qualifications (Preference): Preference will be given to first year students who have already attended this year’s informational meetings. You may also volunteer as a firefighter. (In which case you would have the same responsibilities as a firefighter but you would also have another student job)

 

Fire Fighters – Second Year  (Wednesday mornings, on call)

Floating Lab Computer Maintenance (open schedule)

Description: Regular maintenance of the Macs in the Floating Lab which are used in class, the racerocks.com activity and in the evenings.  A student with Mac experience and skills to help with their maintenance could design and implement a maintenance schedule for the computers.

Qualifications (Preference): Experience with Mac computer maintenance.  Being a member of the racerocks.com activity would be an asset.

 

Floating Lab Seawater Table Maintenance (open schedule)

Description: Students will clean the seawater table and ensure that the animals in it are fed and healthy. The students involved will need to learn what to feed the animals feed  and where to collect the food (PC docks, intertidal zone, subtidally, etc.).  These students may also be responsible for collecting and returning animals.  This job requires students to visit the floating lab regularly to check the seawater table.

Qualifications (Preference): Marine Scientists and Divers are especially encouraged and will be given preference.

 

French Tutors (Open Schedule)

Race Rocks Assistants (one weekday afternoon every two weeks to be determined)

Description: I need five students to tutor Spanish B second years. Each tutor will have 2 tutees and will meet with them once a week for one hour at a time convenient to both tutees and tutor. Tutors will be in charge of practicing conversational skills and reviewing grammatical concepts with their tutees but they must be aware that they are not to help them with any editing or correcting of their class assignments.

Qualifications (Preference): Native Spanish speakers (or students with demonstrated Spanish fluency) will be given preference for this job.

 

Student Communicators (weekday afternoons to be determined)

Description: I need a first year and second year student to write a weekly blog to be posted on the college website.  The purpose of the blog is to create an opportunity for alumni and friends of the college to feel more connected to the college and to be aware of current events, activities and experiences at the college.  The student will be blogging as a representative of the college and therefore the blog must maintain a professional tone. The student will be responsible for updating their blog once per week.  This job can operate on an open schedule.  However if the student needs assistance or coaching, they can meet with the Development Manager any day between 2:30 - 5:00 pm.

Swimming Pool Opening Closing Attendants and Pool Monitors (mornings, evenings to be determined)

Description: Opening the pool: Opening pool at scheduled time and pulling the pool cleaning machine from the pool and general tidying up the pool area. Closing the pool: Closing the pool at scheduled time and ensuring all doors are closed and secure and to ensure no one is left in the pool area after closing time.  Pool Monitors/Attendants: entails scrubbing the scum line, cleaning the floor, general tidying up the pool area, and supervising the pool when people are swimming alone. The purpose is to encourage people to swim and to solve the problem of having to find someone to swim with. If they are lifeguards, they can also give swim lessons during this time.   

Qualifications (Preference): Have passed swim test.  Swim teaching experience great but not required.

 

University Counselor’s Assistants (on call)

Supervisor: Andrew Spray

Description: I need 2 (possibly 3) students to assist mostly with issues concerning university visits, the great majority of which occur during first term. Duties include making sure notices on days of visits are prominently posted by 7:30 am and removed after the visit is over, and also assisting with hosting of visitors, particularly on days of multiple visits, often including sitting through the presentation. Some assistance with processing literature from universities may also be included. The times needed depend on the visit schedule and will be made known by the universities counselor.

Qualifications (Preference): Students wishing to undertake this job need to be ones who have no difficulty being up early in the morning of scheduled visits and who have enough interest in the university application process to attend a number of presentations and ask questions of the visitor. They should also enjoy hosting visitors. They should be well-informed on the university application process. Though second years would more likely have the required qualifications, a first year could still apply.

 

Waterfront Assistants (on call)
